Rachel Re: Correcting the Record on Race
Last Thursday, Rachel Maddow had her long-time sparring partner, Pat Buchanan, on her show to discuss the SCOTUS confirmation hearings of Judge Sotomayor. Now Pat and Rachel are ideological polar opposites, however both are well-spoken, smart and love a good debate; hence why he ends up on Rachel's show so damn much. Usually he is treated as sort of the "crazy uncle" of MSNBC, the one who gets drunk at Thanksgiving and goes all hate-monger racist even before the pie is served. Well, this time Pat went overboard...so much so that even smooth-tempered, logical, gets-along-with-everyone Rachel came back three days later with a "Yeah, what he said? Not true. Totally not true. Here's loads of proof. Sorry Pat, but you are WRONG."

Here is the original debate that caused all the hubris for context:

Here is tonight's Rachel Re: response that she obviously spent all weekend thinking about:

Ms. Maddow, you done good.
Whoa.
Rachel Calls Bull Puckey
Obama Inauguration 2009

Anyone who knows me knows that I was jumping up and down with excitement all day yesterday when:

1. our nation's first African-American president was sworn into office,

and 2. W got on a helicopter and went back to Texas for good.

Yeehaa! Yippee! Mazal tov! Cheers! Hallelujah! Hope! Change! Hope! Change! Hope! Change! All that.

My inauguration experience involved me being stuck at work, toggling between every news website out there because they all took forever to load and all of them crashed multiple times. (MSNBC.com had an EPIC FAIL which I will post the pic of later.) It was strange to me that I was practically the only one in my department watching it; everyone else was working like it was just a regular day. I mean, come on, one of our nation's most historic and momentous events was happening right then and ya'll were reading lanes? What the hell?

Speaking of WTH, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court AND the President-elect both biffed the oath of office? HA! I find that amusing. (UPDATE: Pres Obama retook the oath today at the White House just for safety's sake.) In light of this rare occasion, a popular diarist on The Daily Kos posted his own version of the oath today:

I, Chief Justice John Roberts do solemnly swear, That I royally fracked up
trying to administer the presidential Oath of Office from memory. That I
embarrassed myself and the nation by getting something so simple---something
memorized by every boy and girl in, like, second grade---so excruciatingly
wrong. And, in so doing, came within a butt hair of accidentally making Sasha
Obama President of the United States. Not that that would necessarily be a bad
thing, But you have to admit juggling first grade and the presidency might be a
bit much for a seven year old.
But I digress.
Most important, I do
solemnly swear that four years from now, When I'm swearing in Barack Obama for a
second term, In fact, any time I'm swearing anybody in for anything, whether
it's President of the United States or notary public, I will execute the...no,
wait!...I will faithfully execute the Herculean task of doing what Justice John
Paul Stevens had the good sense to do, given the gravity of the moment, by
bringing an index card---which I can get a whole pack of for a buck over at The
Dollar Store---on which I will have scribbled, legibly, the words to the Oath of
Office, so that I don't frack up again, unnecessarily reminding the world once
more that I am an appointee of former President Bush
So help me
God.
Faithfully.

Anyway, I love our new First Family. They are beautiful, strong and passionate. But what gets me every time is seeing President Obama and Michelle together.... I have to resist the urge to say "awwwww" at every photo I see. They are just so cute together!

Here's to the next four years of hope and change!

Buttars Named Worst Person! Yippeeee!

Yeehaa! Our local homophobic, racist, buffoon of a state senator has finally been nationally recognized for just how stupid he is! Two thumbs up to the staff of Countdown (link to clip here).

Prop 8: Do Unto Others As You Would Have Done Unto You
I know, I know. Olbermann again. Whenever something worth commenting on has happened lately, I have been lazy and instead of writing my own thoughts and comments I have deferred instead to the words of Keith Olbermann. Mainly it is because whatever Special Comment of his I happen to post here happens to say more or less what I think but was written much better than I could ever hope to write it (translation: I'm lazy, a bad writer and have no time.)

The passing of Prop 8 in California only spurred one thought from me: WTF?

That is all the writing genius I could muster through my impatience with conservatives, the LDS Church, and anyone else who wants to continue to strip rights away from other people who are not like them. I respect others' beliefs and do not like to have others force their beliefs on me or anyone else.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

With those words, I give you this very heartfelt, beautfully written Special Comment by Keith Olbermann, from last night's Countdown.

YES. WE. DID.

Woo-Hoo!
Behold, a fabulous, leaked clip from this Sunday's new Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons!

This is obviously a parody of the original voting machine satire, which was made for the 2004 election in Florida:

Evil, Vile Hatred of The Lowest Form
This has gotten ridiculously out of hand. First some right-wing nutjobs are shouting things like "Terrorist!", "Kill him!" and "Off with his head!" at McCain-Palin rallies when Obama's name is mentioned (a note: what do they think this is, Alice in Wonderland or the 16th century?), but NOW we have slashed tires at an Obama rally, death threats to Obama supporters who display Obama/Biden lawn signs and a baby black bear has been brutally killed . And it's only Monday.

WHAT THE F*#@ IS GOING ON WITH THIS COUNTRY?!?!

Where is all this hatred coming from? Is the naive, racist, pro-KKK mentality still alive and well enough to incite this much evil across the country? If you don't like a particular candidate, that is all fine and good. I, for instance, despise and loathe Chris Buttars, LeVar Christensen and Jason Chaffetz, but I would never in a million years threaten to kill their supporters' entire families! Much less kill and dump a baby animal (or any animal) as some sort of morbid, sadistic, messed up symbol!

Where has the morality of Americans gone? Where is our sense of decency?

From Western Carolina University:
A dead bear was found dumped this morning on the Western Carolina University campus, draped with a pair of Obama campaign signs, university police said.

Maintenance workers reported about 7:45 a.m. finding a 75-pound bear cub dumped at the roundabout near the Catamount statute at the entrance to campus, said Tom Johnson, chief of university police.

“It looked like it had been shot in the head as best we can tell. A couple of Obama campaign signs had been stapled together and stuck over its head,” Johnson said.

From Chicago:
Two supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama found handwritten death threats in their mailboxes Thursday and reported them to Villa Park police.

A 74-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man with Obama signs in their front yards near the 600 block of South Villa Avenue received similar letters that had a Villa Park Village Hall return address. "Get the Obama signs off your property—now," the letter reads. "Failure to obey this order will result in the immediate death of all family members." Both residents said they will not remove their signs, though the man, who had voted Republican for 25 years before switching parties this year, said his wife is worried about letting their 7-year-old son play alone outside.

From Fayetteville, North Carolina:
Someone slashed the tires of at least 30 vehicles parked outside the Crown Coliseum on Sunday during a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. The tires were cut while people were inside the Crown Coliseum listening to speeches, said Maj. E. Wright of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Many of the damaged vehicles were parked on Wilkes Road. Representatives from Obama and Sen. John McCain’s campaigns said they were unaware of the acts.

Susan Lagana, the North Carolina communications director for Obama, said it was extremely disappointing and unfortunate that “people would have to experience something like that.” Mario Diaz, communications director for McCain, did not respond to a call late Sunday.

Sarah Revis, who lives on Wilkes Road, said the slashed tires left several women, including a single mother and a toddler, stranded and upset. At least four tow trucks were sent to move the vehicles from the Crown, Revis said.

“This is an embarrassment to this city and to me as a citizen,” Revis said. “I’ve seen women out here crying and men cussing. This is a crying shame.”
A Prevaricating, Mendacious Truth-Stretcher
This is a person running for office who has been confronted with an uncomfortable and inconvenient fact and her response to that is to look into the camera and lie to you enthusiastically and repeatedly. I know I'm not supposed to use that particular "L" word, the "liar" word in politics. It's considered impolite. But sometimes, the most important thing you need to know about a politician is the frequency and enthusiasm and skill with which they lie to you.

Saying a politician is a prevaricating, mendacious truth-stretcher or whatever other thesaurus words we can come up with for lying is just far less efficient than calling a lie a lie, and a liar a liar.
