But the evening after was spent with a great group of friends, tweeps and one sister at a downtown SLC dueling piano bar called Keys on Main.

My best friend Jessie brought cake, my sister's boyfriend taught the bartender how to make a Scooby Snack (its green), and I was forced up on stage to sit on the baby grand piano and be serenaded by a rousing rendition of "...Baby One More Time" or whatever the hell that stupid song is called. It was tons of fun!

Jon Stewart did standup at The Mirage (where Alan works) over the weekend, and as an early birthday present to myself (it will be my only present to myself this year), I packed up Wyatt and roadied down to Vegas. We stayed at Alan and Warren's newly finished Italian villa in Henderson (seriously, it's an Italian villa) and Wyatt got to hang out with his spastic cousin, Lucy. She loooooooves him whereas he hates puppies, but they are good buddies. Warren and I bought new dresses, Lucy puked on the carpet, we took the dogs and did the tourist picture thing, got all dressed up and went out to The Blue Martini (which had a KILLER cover band, that's them on top of the bar in the first picture), and got to listen to Jon Stewart rant about politics and life in general on top of doing a perfect imitation of a puking dog. Great fun was had by all! Jon is f-ing hilarious, seriously, especially when he is angry and uncensored. It was so fun to see him perform. I still hate Vegas, though.

In Which I Have Officially Run Out of Patience For Brewvies

Dear Losties,

Atthe beginning of this month, I had, what I thought was, a fabulous ideain which to celebrate the season premiere of the final season of Lost:have a huge Beginning of The End party with as many Lost nerds in SaltLake that I could find! A number of my co-workers andfriends on Twitter are Losties so I figured I could get 20-30 people tocome, making a decent sized get together.

Theidea expanded and we found out that Brewvies rents out their theatersfor private functions, so I emailed Brewvies to check into thepossibility of showing the premiere there. A manager bythe name of Shawn eventually emailed me back and in the ensuing emailconversation, we came to an agreement where if I only had the initialhead count of 20-30 people attending, he would rent us the theater for$300. However, if I got 50 people or more, he would take $100 off the rental price, bringing it down to $200. Divide that up between everyone and that’s a great deal for what was looking to be the largest Lost party in the area!

Wordgot out, and soon I was forwarding my initial “Are You Interested?”email to local DJs and television critics, friends of friends, friendsof those friends’ friends and an assortment of other people I had nevermet. Fine by me, the more the merrier! Ieven woke up one morning to hear the local DJs discussing my party onthe radio, which started to make me worried that more people would showup than the theater could hold.

Meanwhile, credit card in hand, I waited patiently for Shawn to email or call me to complete the reservation transaction. Asthe date of the premiere was still a couple weeks off, I gave him awhole 6 days to respond to me before I started to get antsy.

On Jan 20, I called Brewvies and asked to speak to him. I was told that he no longer worked there and had “unexpectedly left” the previous week. I explained my situation to the guy on the phone who forwarded my call to another manager named Andrea. Sheexplained that she had not heard of our arrangement and Shawn had notput anything down on the calendar for that date, yet she said it“should not be a problem” and I should talk to a “Colin” who had takenover Shawn’s duties in the interim. Colin would be in later, she said, and I gave her my name and phone number with instructions for him to call me ASAP.

After hearing nothing, I called back mid afternoon the next day (Jan 21). Colin was in a meeting, did I want to leave a message? YES PLEASE. They would have him call me. Well,I am not a patient soul and after only a couple hours of more waiting,I called back and FINALLY got ahold of the mythical “Colin”. Heconfirmed that Shawn had not told anyone about our arrangement norwritten anything on the calendar, yet it should “not be a problem.” Iasked Colin for his email address, which he gave reluctantly, to whichto forward my entire conversation with Shawn. After getting off thephone (it was a mere two minute conversation), I immediately forwardedmy entire Gmail conversation with Shawn to Colin.

24 hours later, I had not yet heard back, not even a confirmation that he had received the email and was looking it over. Nothing. So I emailed him again. Later that afternoon, I received the following response (the misspellings are his):

Jenny,

Theproblem I am having is that the current films at Brewvies are doingblockbuster business, which was not true whne Shawn origionally spoketo you.

Cancellingprime time shows could breach our contract with the film companies. Iwill need to evaluate the business level with our new films and alsosee what films we are picking up that week before I can give you a firmanswer. Please allow me to respond on Monday.

Asof right now, Tuesday January 26, 2010 at 1:10 pm, exactly twenty daysafter I initially contacted Brewvies about potentially bringing them alarge number of paying customers, I still do not have my answer. Ifeel as if I have been attempting to secure a work Visa to Tehraninstead of trying to rent a small theater in Salt Lake City whichactually markets theater rentals on its website (www.brewvies.com).

There will still be a Beginning of The End party on Feb 2 from 7-10 pm in Salt Lake City, but it will not be at Brewvies. Random Adventure #3639: Colbert Report Audience in NYC

Click here for the entire episode that Dave and I attended (this past Tuesday, Sept 29). I was in NYC for all of 18 hours, mainly due to my work being insane right now and not being able to take any more time off. I Jetblued it from SLC to JFK, arriving Tuesday morning @ 6am, took the subway to midtown (fell asleep enroute, almost missing my stop), found a Starbucks (which was abnormally difficult), walked to our prearranged meeting place (the Borders between Penn Station and Madison Square Garden) and was promptly deluged by finches and pigeons. After an hour of waiting for David with him not answering texts or phonecalls, I texted his wife, asking if she knew where her husband was. She replied "He's looking for you! He left his phone at home! He just called from Penn Station!" It took another 15 minutes or so for us to finally find each other; apparently we had been passing each other for over an hour! WTF. I didn't think I was THAT blind. Well, there are thousands of people running around the streets of NYC at 9am and I was admittedly not awake, so the fault should point in my direction.

We spent the rest of the day lollygagging around the Midtown/Hell's Kitchen area, hitting four separate bookstores, eating a delightful brunch of famous hot dogs at Grey's Papaya and enjoying the aura of being in The City. We eventually made it up to Central Park then came back down past 30 Rock (Hi Keith!). I believe I found the greatest homemade macaroni and cheese ever at a place in Midtown called Burger Heaven. They bake cornflakes on top like funeral potatoes!

We made our way over to the Colbert Report studio and stood in line for a couple hours with 80 other member of the Colbert Nation. To get into the studio, we had to go through security that was more stringent than the airport. They had this walkthrough metal detector that seriously was picking up people's fillings. They kept all 86 of us backstage for a stinkin' long time; I felt like cattle herded into a pen. After they finally released us into the studio, we were placed in certain seats by the stage manager. Dave and I were put on the back row next to the EXIT sign above the hallway where everyone comes out. I was staring down onto Stephen's head thinking "His hair is sure growing back well."

Hiking The Subway

As I have never been one to turn down a good adventure (especially a free one), I joined a bunch of tweeps last weekend for a hike through a slot canyon in Zion NP known as "The Subway". My pictures weren't nearly as good as our "trip photog" Jeremiah's, so here are a few of his. Mine are posted on my Flickr page as well as links to more of his in my galleries. The hike took us approx 10 hours to hike in and out and in that 10 hours we experienced:

scenic red rock vistas
straight vertical climbs and descents
rappelling
swimming through frigid water
wading through frigid water
sliding through frigid water
a hell of a lot of bouldering
losing the trail
finding the trail
losing the trail again
a late afternoon thunderstorm during flash flood season
many entertaining stories from our guide, Super Firefighter Jim J.
an impressive amount of swear words from the more conservative in the group
discovering that Jenny has issues with gravity
and many more thoroughly painful and entertaining adventures.

Look What I Grew!

This mass of divine-smelling greenery is two tomato plants that I bought as little teeny seedlings, planted in a planter which was then destroyed by my neighbor's drunkass friends and the poor baby tomato plants thrown in the garbage...which I then rescued, cursed out my neighbor, and grew some massive plants! I just have to brag, because I have never grown anything this big before. And productive to boot! Next year, salsa garden!

I also planted a cute little cantaloupe plant, knowing full well that it was too late in the season to produce any fruit, so I held no expectations. However, it has grown to over 5 feet in length with multiple vines......and a little baby melon! Look how cute! I'm watching how big it gets before it freezes.

For the film festival this past weekend, my group and I stayed in Mountain Village, a cluster of lodges on the other side of the mountain of the town of Telluride. To get into town (and to work each morning), we had to take a 20 minute gondola ride through some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Everywhere I looked, it felt like I was in a postcard. Here are a few pics of the views from the gondola commute that became the highlight of my day....except for the part when we had to go BACK to the lodge at midnight and it was pitch black dark, in the gondola car by myself 1000 ft above the ground IN THE WIND. *shiver* Eerie.

Last Thursday, Rachel Maddow had her long-time sparring partner, Pat Buchanan, on her show to discuss the SCOTUS confirmation hearings of Judge Sotomayor. Now Pat and Rachel are ideological polar opposites, however both are well-spoken, smart and love a good debate; hence why he ends up on Rachel's show so damn much. Usually he is treated as sort of the "crazy uncle" of MSNBC, the one who gets drunk at Thanksgiving and goes all hate-monger racist even before the pie is served. Well, this time Pat went overboard...so much so that even smooth-tempered, logical, gets-along-with-everyone Rachel came back three days later with a "Yeah, what he said? Not true. Totally not true. Here's loads of proof. Sorry Pat, but you are WRONG."

The opening of Cassandra Barney's new show "24 Little Tin Paintings" was last Friday at Kayo Gallery in SLC and I finally got to see in person the first (and probably) only original, unique painting that I have ever purchased. All of her paintings were divine. I am no artist, but with artist sisters I kinda know some terminology like oil paints vs acrylic paints and varnish and lacquer, but that's about the extent of my knowledge so don't make fun of me. :-) Cassi did this thing with all the paintings to make the paint crack and look old that I thought was a wonderful touch. I had two other favorites other than mine, the honeybee and the full length woman dressed in all white with blue and gray accents.

Cassi was such a dear during the show, she (rather Dan Barney) took pictures of all the people who inspired each painting and she explained the meaning and symbolism to everyone. Mine was a bit obvious: achieving a balance between fire and water with me perfectly in the middle of those two elements. The flower in the right corner is a passion flower that represents my true passions in life.

Last fall, I regaled my friend the famous artist, Cassi Barney, with tales of my pyrotechnic exploits from that past summer. "Sometimes I wish paintings had powers. I wish they could right what is wrong.
I was talking to a girl the other night who had a streak of bad luck with fire. In my mind I painted her with fire in one hand and water in the other, wishing to give her balance.
I’ve carefully picked out each object depicted in a painting I’m working on right now in my studio. I’m doing this painting for someone specific and I thought of it as a blessing for her life. I want to paint blessings. I also want to paint my gratitude for beautiful life, for people I love.

I remembered Ex-votos I’d seen. I imagined myself a retablista, painting offerings of thanks. Ex-voto short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made" or in gratitude or devotion."

I was shocked and extremely touched that she chose to do one of me. You all know how bad last year was for me. When I found out Cassi was doing one of her amazing paintings specifically about my stories...well, I have to admit that I went all weepy girly. (I probably will again when I see the finished product in person on Friday, I'm like that.)

Cassi did 24 "little tin paintings" in all, all of them from stories submitted by others. Her show opens this Friday, June 19 at Kayo Gallery in SLC during the monthly Gallery Stroll. She recently finished them and posted pictures of all 24 retablos on her website.

This is "mine". I love it. I cannot wait see it in person, hug Cassi and thank her for such a beautiful blessing.
